Harkness sits next to Kurunjang and Melton West on the northern side of the Melton township and had about 12,500 residents at the 2021 Census, one of the bigger suburbs in the City of Melton. Its median age was 30, ten years younger than the Melton township's, and 94 per cent of occupied homes were separate houses. That points to a suburb of family homes on newer estates, where many yards are still being finished.

Before you book
If your estate has a Housing Design Guideline endorsed under the planning scheme, check whether it says anything about front gardens, fences or driveways. On a new lot, ask the landscaper how they will deal with compacted fill and builder's rubble before turf or garden beds go in.
Registration and permits
Planting, turf and garden maintenance are not registered work in Victoria. Walls, paving, decks and other structural work under a domestic building contract worth more than $10,000 must be carried out by a practitioner registered with the Building and Plumbing Commission, so ask who is registered and whether anything needs a building permit.
