Before you book
Read your Housing Design Guideline if your development has one, and check whether it covers front gardens or fences. On a new lot, ask what the quote includes for clearing builder's rubble and preparing compacted ground, because turf and plants struggle without it.
Registration and permits
Planting, turf and garden maintenance are not registered work in Victoria. Walls, paving, decks and other structural work under a domestic building contract worth more than $10,000 must be carried out by a practitioner registered with the Building and Plumbing Commission, so ask who is registered and whether anything needs a building permit.
